What did debility mean on a death certificate?
On a death record, debility meant general weakness or failure of strength, entered when no sharper cause offered itself. In modern terms it usually pointed to no single condition; often malnutrition, chronic disease, or frailty. For infants it usually points at feeding failure or prematurity; for the old it shades into senile decay. Read it by the age on the record. Expect it on records mostly 1700s-1900s.
